ABIDJAN HOSTS THE 19TH CONFERENCE OF THE EASTERN ATLANTIC HYDROGRAPHIC COMMISSION: A STRATEGIC GATHERING FOR AFRICA’S MARITIME FUTURE
From July 1 to 3, 2026, Abidjan will host the 19th Conference of the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission (EAtHC-19), organized at the Azalaï Hotel under the auspices of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). This high-level meeting will bring together key hydrography stakeholders to address issues relating to navigation safety, marine cartography, and regional cooperation.
Held under the Patronage of "His Excellency Mr. Téné Birahima OUATTARA, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and co-chaired by Mr. Amadou KONÉ, Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, and Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, Minister of Infrastructure and Road Maintenance", the conference will gather more than twenty member States, international experts, and numerous maritime sector partners.
The organization of this event in Côte d’Ivoire reflects the country’s growing role in regional maritime governance. Thanks to the modernization of its port infrastructure, the strengthening of its logistics capabilities, and its strategic position on the Atlantic coast, Côte d’Ivoire is emerging as one of West Africa’s leading maritime hubs.
In a context marked by increasing trade flows, the development of logistics corridors, and evolving navigation safety requirements, EAtHC-19 will provide a privileged platform for consultation aimed at strengthening cooperation among States and promoting increasingly efficient hydrographic services.
The discussions will focus in particular on the modernization of hydrographic services, the implementation of international standards, the production and management of digital marine data, technical capacity building, and regional cooperation.
The recommendations expected from the conference will contribute to enhance navigation safety, support the development of port infrastructure, and strengthen the competitiveness of maritime platforms across the region.
As a prelude to the conference, a regional capacity-building seminar will be held on June 29 and 30, 2026, under the theme:
“Hydrography, Oceanography and Marine Cartography Training in West and Central Africa: Achievements and Perspectives.”
Beyond the scientific discussions, EAtHC-19 will also serve as a showcase for Côte d’Ivoire’s expertise in the port and maritime industry. Delegates will notably undertake an official visit to the Port of Abidjan to discover its strategic infrastructure and operational capabilities.
By hosting this 19th Conference, Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms its commitment to strengthened maritime cooperation, safer navigation, and the development of hydrographic services that meet international standards for the benefit of all Eastern Atlantic States.
