BLUE ECONOMY, LOGISTICS AND ENERGY TRANSITION: THE PORT OF ABIDJAN STRENGTHENS ITS EXCHANGES WITH THE CANARY ISLANDS
The Managing Director General of the Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ, accompanied by members of his Executive Committee, received in audience, on Friday, June 5, 2026, a Spanish delegation led by Mr. Luis Padilla MACABEO, Director General for Relations with Africa of the Government of the Canary Islands.
This meeting took place as part of a mission under the INTERREG MAC Programme (Madeira-Azores-Canary Islands), the European Union’s main territorial cooperation instrument aimed at strengthening ties between the outermost regions of Macaronesia, particularly the Canary Islands, and the coastal countries of West Africa.
Through this initiative, the European Union seeks to promote socio-economic exchanges, innovation, and the development of structuring projects among the territories concerned. The programme therefore provides a privileged framework for identifying new opportunities for collaboration between the ports of the Canary Islands and those along the West African coastline.
Discussions focused on several areas of common interest, including the development of maritime and port activities, enhanced mobility and logistics connectivity, environmental protection, the promotion of blue economy, and issues related to energy transition. Prospects for technical and economic cooperation were also examined.
On this occasion, Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ highlighted the importance of international cooperation in the modernization of port infrastructure, the development of maritime and logistics activities, and the promotion of sustainable growth based on the principles of blue economy and energy transition. He reaffirmed the Abidjan Port Authority’s commitment to remaining open to value-creating partnerships and expertise-sharing initiatives.
For his part, Mr. Luis Padilla MACABEO reiterated the Canary Islands’ willingness to strengthen relations with the Ivorian port platform, particularly in the identified areas of cooperation.
This visit reflects the shared determination of both parties to build sustainable partnerships in support of logistics performance, environmental protection, and economic development.
The meeting concluded on a note of mutual satisfaction, with both parties expressing their commitment to pursuing discussions in order to turn the identified opportunities into concrete actions.
