PORT DIPLOMACY: THE PORT OF ABIDJAN STRENGTHENS ITS STRATEGIC RELATIONS WITH BRAZIL

The Acting Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ, received in audience, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, a Brazilian delegation led by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Brazil in Côte d’Ivoire, as part of efforts to strengthen maritime and port cooperation between Africa and South America.

This diplomatic meeting took place on the occasion of the call at the Port of Abidjan of the Brazilian warship “ARAGUARI P122,” illustrating the growing momentum of exchanges between the two countries in the port, maritime, and security sectors.

During the discussions, the Acting Managing Director of PAA welcomed the Brazilian delegation, notably including Commander ANSELMO, commanding officer of the Brazilian naval vessel. He praised the excellent

relations of friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and Brazil and highlighted the shared commitment of both parties to further strengthening their strategic partnerships.

Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ also underscored the significant logistical and operational capabilities of the Port of Abidjan, a leading port and multimodal hub in West Africa, equipped with modern infrastructure and connected to the main corridors serving the sub-regional hinterland. He recalled that the Port of Abidjan is actively pursuing its modernization drive in order to consolidate its attractiveness and competitiveness at the international level.

In this regard, he referred to the maritime and commercial cooperation agreement currently being finalized between the Abidjan Port Authority and the Port of Santos, Brazil’s main port and one of the largest ports in Latin America. This partnership is intended to promote the exchange of experience, the development of trade flows, and the sharing of expertise in the port, logistics, and maritime sectors.

Speaking in turn, Commander ANSELMO expressed his satisfaction with the warm welcome extended to the Brazilian delegation in Côte d’Ivoire. He also praised the quality of the cooperation established with the Ivorian Navy, particularly through joint exercises and training activities aimed at combating transnational organized crime and illegal fishing.

The commander of the Brazilian vessel further indicated that Brazil has two leading naval academies open to Ivorian officers wishing to benefit from specialized training in various maritime and security fields, following an intensive preparatory Portuguese-language program.

Through this meeting, the Abidjan Port Authority reaffirms its commitment to promoting dynamic port diplomacy based on international openness, the sharing of expertise, and the development of strategic partnerships, with a view to strengthening its position as a major logistics platform and a key player in maritime trade in West Africa.
