AFTER 17 YEARS OF ABSENCE, AMERICAN WHEAT RETURNS TO CÔTE D’IVOIRE
On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, the Port of Abidjan marked a new milestone in its role as a regional logistics hub by welcoming the vessel Chrysoula S at Quay 1.
The ship carried 27,000 tons of wheat from the United States, symbolizing the return of American wheat to Côte d’Ivoire after more than 17 years of absence.
This arrival, made possible through SEABOARD Group and its subsidiary, Les Grands Moulins d’Abidjan (GMA), illustrates the strengthening of food cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and the United States. It aims to support not only national food security but also that of the wider West African subregion.
To mark the event, an official reception ceremony was held in the presence of several dignitaries, including H.E. Jessica DAVIS BA, U.S. Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire; Mr. TRA BI Emmanuel, Director of Industry, representing the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. DIARRASSOUBA Tahirou; a representative of the Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority; and Mr. Greg STROUGH, Chief Executive Officer of GMA, alongside Mr. François MENENTEAU, Deputy CEO.
In his remarks, Mr. MENENTEAU recalled SEABOARD Group’s commitment since 2018 to providing sustainable nutrition solutions in Côte d’Ivoire and across the region. This latest shipment, he said, reinforces those efforts to meet growing food demand.
The representative of the Managing Director of PAA highlighted the strategic role of the port in the supply chain for essential goods:
“The arrival of the Chrysoula S reflects the confidence placed in the Port of Abidjan as a modern, reliable, and secure platform. It also underscores our strategic role in the regional logistics chain, particularly for the milling industry and local consumption.”
The U.S. Ambassador expressed her satisfaction with the return of American wheat to Côte d’Ivoire after 17 years, commending the strong and promising partnership between Washington and Abidjan.
“The arrival of this shipment symbolizes the strength of the relationship between the United States and Côte d’Ivoire, as well as the vitality of our economic and trade partnerships with West African nations,” she stated.
With more than 40 million tons of cargo handled in 2024, the Port of Abidjan remains West Africa’s leading maritime hub. The modernization works carried out over the past decade, under the leadership of President Alassane Ouattara, have significantly increased its capacity and strengthened its international appeal.
