THE ABIDJAN PORT HOSTS A STRATEGIC CAPACITY-BUILDING SEMINAR FOR MARITIME AND PORT STAKEHOLDERS
The Abidjan Port Authority (PAA) hosted, on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the auditorium of its Headquarters, the opening ceremony of a capacity-building seminar for maritime and port stakeholders, under the theme: “Port Security Management”, scheduled to run until March 27.
The ceremony was chaired by the Chief of Staff of the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, in charge of Maritime Affairs, Mr. Benjamin SORO, representing his Minister, Dr. Célestin DOH. It was held in the presence of several officials, notably the Director General of Maritime Affairs, Colonel-Major Julien Yao KOUASSI, the Director of Maritime Operations, Security and Environment (DOMSE), Colonel COFFI Yao Emmanuel, as well as the Commercial, Marketing and Communication Director, Dr. Titi PALÉ épouse KOUMAN.
This seminar, led by the United States Coast Guard as part of the United States Government’s International Port Security Program, was conducted by Lieutenant Matthew NAYLOR. It aims to strengthen the operational capacities of stakeholders in Côte d’Ivoire’s maritime and port industry, particularly those of the ports of Abidjan and San Pedro, in addressing security challenges.
In his address, Mr. Benjamin SORO commended the quality of cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and the United States, highlighting the Ivorian Government’s continued commitment to maritime and port security, in line with the vision of the President of the Republic, H.E. Alassane OUATTARA. He stressed the need to strengthen security mechanisms in order to guarantee the performance and attractiveness of the country’s port platforms.
The seminar proceedings will focus in particular on risk management, stakeholder coordination, and port cybersecurity, in a context marked by evolving threats.
All speakers welcomed the organization of this training session, recalling the strategic role of ports in economic development. In 2025, the Abidjan port platform recorded a net overall traffic of 46.9 million tonnes of cargo, confirming its position as a major logistics hub in West Africa and reinforcing the need for an efficient security framework.
This initiative follows the preparatory meeting held on March 23, 2026, which notably included a visit to the Abidjan Port’s video surveillance control room, thereby strengthening the foundations of collaboration among the various stakeholders.
