EAtHC-19 : REGIONAL CAPACITY-BUILDING SEMINAR OFFICIALLY OPENS IN ABIDJAN

As a prelude to the 19th Conference of the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission (EAtHC-19), the Regional Capacity-Building Seminar in Hydrography officially opened on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Azalaï Hotel in Marcory, Abidjan.

The ceremony was held in the presence of the Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority (PAA), Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ, whose participation reflects the importance the Port Authority attaches to the development of hydrography and capacity-building in the maritime and port industry.

For two days, the event brings together experts in hydrography, oceanography, and marine cartography from West Africa, Central Africa, North Africa, and Europe, particularly France and Spain, as well as international technical partners. It provides a privileged platform for experience sharing and capacity strengthening around the theme:

“Training in Hydrography, Oceanography, and Marine Cartography in West and Central Africa: Achievements and Perspectives.”

Prior to the opening of the proceedings, Mr. Kassoum TRAORÉ, Managing Director of the Abidjan Port Authority, entrusted Mr. MONI N’Guessan Hyacinthe, Director of Infrastructure and Project Management, with the task of extending, on his behalf, a warm welcome to all participating delegations. Accompanied by the Commercial, Marketing and Communication Director, Dr. Titi PALÉ, he expressed his satisfaction with Côte d’Ivoire being selected to host this important gathering, which reflects the confidence placed in the country.

He expressed his hope that the discussions would be fruitful and wished all participants a pleasant stay.

The first presentations highlighted the progress achieved by States in capacity development, the cooperation initiatives undertaken with specialized institutions, and future prospects aimed at sustainably strengthening the region’s technical capacities in response to the growing challenges facing the maritime sector.

One of the highlights of the first day was the presentation of the Abidjan Port Authority by Mr. FALLY Gla Stéphane, Deputy Director of Infrastructure and Project Management. Highly appreciated by participants, the presentation showcased the investments made by the Port Authority to modernize its infrastructure, as well as the importance attached to hydrography as a key driver of navigation safety, operational performance, and port development.

The seminar will continue on Tuesday, June 30, with additional technical sessions before the official opening of the 19th Conference of the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission (EAtHC-19), scheduled to take place from July 1 to 3, 2026, in Abidjan, under the Patronage of His Excellency Mr. Téné Birahima OUATTARA, Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Amadou KONÉ, Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, and Mr. Hien Yacouba SIÉ, Minister of Infrastructure and Road Maintenance.
